SMIT Rotterdam moves to new location
SMIT Rotterdam is moving to a new location in the Waalhaven, located on the south bank of the ‘Nieuwe Maas’ in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The office will be a new milestone in the history of the company, and it is envisaged that the new office will lead to many positive changes in the working environment of SMIT’s Dutch employees. Most of the departments now scattered around the city will be combined into one main office.

A dedicated project manager has been appointed to manage the project, together with an internal team who provide assistance and specialist knowledge. The relocation of the head office has been worked on for quite some time now, and this process will go on for months to come. In the mean time, warehouses that were previously located in Maassluis and Ridderkerk have already been relocated. The new warehouse and the surrounding terminal facility are located at pier 2, a stone’s throw from the new head office, next to the harbour bay where SMIT now moors its sheerlegs, tugs and barges. SMIT Harbour Towage Rotterdam’s tugs will stay situated at their current strategic position.
The new location offers many advantages for SMIT. For one, the 13 locations in Rotterdam will soon be combined into one home base and 3 secondary facilities. This is much more cost-effective, and it will also help to integrate the different operational and office units into a sense of unity and shared responsibility. It will provide SMIT with the great advantage of integrating all operations into one location and thus creating synergies throughout the entire organisation.

Multiplan from Den Bosch undertook the development of the main office building in close consultation with the project team to ensure that all the requirements of Smit were incorporated into the design. They were chosen as the preferred company out of six that were asked to hand in draft plans, they provided SMIT with a preliminary design that was very much to the company’s wish. In addition, Multiplan’s architecture department and SMIT’s project team have jointly developed the interior of the main building.
The floor plan of the new office has also been designed to improve internal integration. Where the current office has a kind of “cell” structure where many employees have their own office, the new building has settled for more glass and open workspaces. Free and open communication between colleagues is the call for the future. The floor plan has been made in co-operation with the project team.
Waalhaven The new main office is located between pier 2 and 3 of the Waalhaven in Rotterdam. The initiative of SMIT to create it’s home base at this location has served as a catalyst for the development of this particular part of the Waalhaven, and the area will now be developed as an extensive office park targeted at the maritime industry. SMIT’s facility will be the first of at least four office buildings for port related organisations. Talks have been held with the authorities to discuss the accessibility to the site. .
The new warehouse, the surrounding terminal facility and the additional quay and jetty facilities at pier 2 & 3 will be subject to SMIT’s demanding quality requirements. The SMIT SHE-Q Department has developed several plans in order to maintain SMIT’s safe and qualitative working environment. In co-operation with the fire brigade a location based escape plan, a company emergency plan and a code of conduct are being made to ensure safety and quality.
SMIT expects to complete the move into the new building, beginning of December 2004.
