Introduction
SMIT Rebras - update November 2008 (this update will be given every month)
- SMIT Rebras - Rebocadores do Brasil S.A.
- Main activity: harbour towage in Brazil.
- October 2002 Rebras – Rebocadores do Brasil S.A. was established by Mr. André França Pires de Amorim (Naval Architect, MBA Finance, entrepreneur).
- 2004 Rebras placed here 3 new ASD tugs (53 TBP) under long-term bare-boat charter to CRBSM (joint venture of Docenave (Companhia Vale do Rio Doce) and Wilson Sons) in São Luis.
- Late 2005 Joint Venture agreement signed between SMIT and Rebras.
- Early 2006 due diligence successfully completed.
- March 2006 start construction of 18 new ASD tugs (45-70 TBP) at Detroit Brasil shipyard in Itajaí.
- October 2006 SMIT Rebras head office established in Rio de Janeiro with Mauro Fernando Sales as Executive Director and Pieter van Stein as Director Operations.
- December 2007 first of 18 new tugs delivered. Since then every month one tug delivered.
- February 2008 start of operations in Santos with 4 tugs.
- May 2008 start of operations in São Luis (Ponta da Madeira & Itaqui) with 4 tugs.
- September 2008 start of operations in Paranaguá with 2 tugs.
- November 2008 start of operations expected in Sepetiba (Itaguaí) with 2 tugs.
- Late 2008 award expected of contract to construct 12 more new ASD tugs (70 TBP) in Brazil.
- First half 2009 start of operations expected in fifth and possible sixth port.
- Mid 2009 last of first batch of 18 new tugs expected to be delivered.
- Late 2011 last of second batch of 12 new tugs expected to be delivered.
- Late 2011 SMIT Rebras will be active in 8-10 of the major Brazilian ports with 30 new ASD tugs (45-70 TBP) and about 200 crew and 75 staff.

General Management

Mauro Fernando Sales (1967; Brazil), Executive Director, is a Naval Engineer / MBA with more than 20 years experience in the Brazilian maritime sector with the companies Lachmann, Wilson Sons, and H. Dantas. Mauro already worked for Rebras from the start in 2002 until delivery of the first three tugs in 2004. His last position was General Manager of the towage company Sulnorte in Rio de Janeiro.

Pieter van Stein (1969; Netherlands), Director Operations, is a Business Economist (MSc) with more than 13 years worldwide experience in the SMIT group while based in the Netherlands, United States, Venezuela, Mexico, Dubai, and South Africa. His last position was General Manager of SMIT Subsea in Cape Town. |
