SMIT Salvage

Nord Discovery

In December the bulk carrier ‘Nord Discovery’ 52,300Mt, was transporting a cargo of urea bound from Qatar to ports in Brazil. On the 13th of December the vessel was under assistance from the Pilot Association, whilst navigating into the port of Paranagua, when she touched bottom.

The grounding caused structural damage to a number of her starboard double bottom tanks, which flooded quickly. However, the vessel was able to proceed to her berth and discharge its cargo.

Upon completion of the discharge operation the vessel proceeded to anchorage where a SMIT team was ready to patch the four tanks in accordance with Class requirements. The temporary repairs were approved and the vessel was allowed to sail to a fully outfitted repair port for permanent repairs to the hull.
